Adore this article! You know I don't have a single salvia in my garden 😱 But I do have a gardening gift voucher from a very generous Aunt that will help me rectify this immediately! Love reading all your reccos Angela- will report back on which ones I can get here in the UK.

Thank you, Kendall! I love a good gift voucher! I know that Monty Don grows Amistad with great success at Longmeadow -- that's how I first learned of that variety! I will be curious to know what you find at your local garden centers!

I grow so many of these in pots I put on my porch in central Pennsylvania. All summer I enjoy watching the insects and hummingbirds. Salvias are the best. I’ve tried overwintering them in the house but that just doesn’t work.

Oh, you are right. Some of the perennial varieties from warmer climes need consistent sun to overwinter. They don't actually have a dormant period, and our houses aren't sunny enough. But try some of the colder-rated perennials. They will overwinter outside to be sure!

I have salvia seeds on the way. Can't wait to plant them.

Wonderful! Some of those varieties take a lot of time to germinate, so have patience! But others are very quick -- the annuals are like wildfire!
